Mr. Remmel joined the firm in 1981. For the past 24 years, his practice
has primarily involved commercial litigation involving a wide range of
subjects including construction, insurance, pollution and tort actions.
Mr. Remmel received his B.A. in political science from the University of
California, Berkeley in 1973, and his J.D. degree from Peninsula
University in 1979.
Mr. Remmel has handled all aspects of civil litigation in both the state
and federal court systems, including trial and appellate work. He has
acted as a consultant to insurance companies, policyholders and law
firms concerning questions involving complex insurance-related matters,
including advertising injury, personal injury, wrongful termination,
intellectual property claims, construction defect claims and a wide
variety of motor vehicle and tort claims. Mr. Remmel has drafted policy
language for inclusion in insurance policies both in terms of
endorsements and specific policy language. Mr. Remmel has handled to
conclusion numerous bad faith and coverage-related cases on behalf of
national insurance companies and is called upon on a regular basis to
resolve difficult disputes between insurers and their insureds.
Mr. Remmel has also expanded his practice to include representation of
and advice to Asian based insurance companies and to product
manufacturers whose products are sold and/or distributed in the United
States.
In addition to his involvement in civil litigation, Mr. Remmel provides
settlement conference and mediation services privately and as a Judge
Pro Tempore for the Santa Clara County Superior Court. Mr. Remmel also
provides mediation services as a panel mediator for the State of
California Department of Insurance Consumer Services Division. In
addition to providing party representation in several hundred cases
involving mediation and arbitration, Mr. Remmel has received extensive
training concerning alternative dispute resolution through the
University of California, Santa Cruz Extension Certification Program.
Mr. Remmel provides alternative dispute resolution services both through
state- sanctioned as well as private proceedings.
Mr. Remmel is a member of the Santa Clara County Bar Association, San
Mateo County Bar Association, participates as a Judge Pro
Tempore/Settlement Conference Judge Pro Tempore, Santa Clara County
Superior Court, and is a panel mediator on the State of California
Department of Insurance Mediation Program.
